Garbage Guru City of Sydney's ultimate guide to recycling and disposing of stuff.

  • Book a free collection

You can have whitegoods, large household items and some garden organics collected for free. Here’s what we can and can’t collect. Bookings are essential – book online or call 02 9265 9333. Collection days depend on where you live and will be confirmed when the booking is made.

  • Or you could ...

  • Donate to a charity

Charities will accept items in good condition you don’t want or need anymore. Put them in your local Collection Bin or give them over the counter. Some charities offer a pick-up service – visit Smith Family, Salvos, Vinnies for more info.

  • Donate to the Bower

If you have household furniture, bikes, kitchenware, books, working appliances or small amounts of building materials that you no longer want, call The Bower on 02 9568 6280 to see if they can take your donation. They offer a free collection service for City of Sydney residents. If they can’t take your goods they’ll refer you to someone who will.

  • Post on Freecycle

Give away your stuff for free on Freecycle.

  • Try your hand at upcycling

Head here for some upcycling tips or try an upcycling workshop run by Green Villages or the Green Living Centre.

  • Put it on Gumtree

For anything you no longer want, use or need, put it up for sale or give it away on Gumtree.
